This is really amazing. Allah talks about the heavenly bodies in the Surah 36 namely Yaseen, Ayah # 39 that all the heavenly bodies in the heavens Swim, float or go around an orbit. Not only that Allah is telling us about a scientific or astronomical fact that all heavenly bodies have Orbits and they go around, but the words that are used, or the phrase that is used in this verse which says " All heavenly bodies swim in an orbit" is a textual miracle. The phrase that is used is :

کل فی فلک یسبحون

Now if we you take the phrase

کل فی فلګ

and reverse it it makes the same phrase with the same meaning

Read it from both sides and it reads the same thing

Thus they form a Circle or an orbit, that is to say a word picture of the Orbits of these heavenly bodies is shown to us.

Malaysian state launches Islamic currency

KUALA LUMPUR: A Malaysian state on Thursday launched the Islamic dinar and dirham as an alternative currency, allowing the golden and silver coins to be used as legal tender alongside conventional banknotes.

Authorities in northern Kelantan state, which is ruled by the Islamic opposition party PAS, said the Islamic currencies would be used in many shops in the state in addition to the national currency, the ringgit.

“We have over 1,000 shops that have signed up to our campaign and agreed to accept the dinar and dirham for the purchase of goods,” state cabinet minister Husam Musa told AFP.

He said signboards have been erected in the main market in the state capital Kota Bharu to show the conversion table between the dinar and ringgit, and participating shops will display stickers to encourage people to use the coins.

“The response has been very positive and all the coins which were worth a total of 2.0 million ringgit (629,000 dollars) have been sold out at the launch today,” said Husam, who is in charge of economic and finance planning.

According to Islamic law, the dinar measures 4.25 grams of gold, while the dirham is 3.0 grams of pure silver.

A golden coin is equivalent to about 582 ringgit (183 dollars) while the silver coin is worth around 13 ringgit but their values fluctuate according to market prices.

Husam said the dinar and dirham currencies can also be used dealings with state government agencies, such as paying “zakat”, or alms for the poor.

There has been a long debate in Malaysia, a Muslim-majority country with large ethnic Chinese and Indian communities, to introduce the coins as legal tender nationally.

Former premier Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, whose administration promoted a moderate form of Islam that emphasised economic and scientific development, shot down the proposal to use the Islamic currencies.

But his predecessor, Mahathir Mohamad, was an advocate of the dinar system and urged Muslim countries to use it as a trade instrument.

The debate has died down since current Prime Minister Najib Razak came to power last year.

Porn is so freely available on the Internet, I can't believe anyone pays for it.
Yet, supposedly porn is a $12 billion a year industry in the US, of which the Internet represents $2.5 billion.
I suspect porn receives a hidden subsidy from the Illuminati so it can be free. This subsidy may take the form of money laundering.
Porn serves a vital function for the Illuminati. We know they want to enslave us using debt, mind control and false flag terrorism. But we are not aware they have a deliberate program to enslave us spiritually using sex.
Put another way, the Illuminati is a satanic cult based on the Jewish Cabala. The course of "modern" history and culture has been designed to induct the human race into this pagan sex cult.
Its cosmology imagines that sexual intercourse somehow restores cosmic harmony. We have imbibed its idea that the mere act of intercourse is an edifying mystical-religious experience. This has resulted in the deification of sex and young beautiful women. Of course, anonymous sex is actually an incredibly degrading experience for both men and women.
Sexual degradation is the primary instrument used by the Illuminati to induct people into Satanism.
Thus, they promote everything that is unnatural and perverse: anonymous sex, bestiality, incest, pedophilia, and homosexuality (which usually involves anonymous sex and more.) This is how they enslave mankind.

SEXUAL LIBERATION
We don't like to admit it but I'm afraid "sexual liberation" was a ruse.

Subahanallah, an amazing thing happened, we were listening to an audio Tafseer lecture of this Surah with our family as we hold regular Quran Halaqahs at home everyday. The brother who was doing the Tafseer mentioned about one of the Scholars in the past believed there was a numerical sequence and balance in the letters and words of the Quran. I myself always believe that there is mathematical and numerical coding in the Ayaat of the Quran, so all of a sudden I do not know how it came to my mind I should count all the letters or Haroof of this Surah. As a family we all started counting the letters in the Surah and to the Surprise of everyone the total of all the letters was 114. This is the total number of all the Surahs in the Quran. Each count of every letter stands for one Surah of the Quran which makes the total of 114 Surahs. This means that the whole Quran with all its 114 Surahs was sent down on this night to Baitul 'Izzah in the lower heavens and then it was revealed gradually to our Beloved Prophet in parts.

Listening to the Qur’an being recited correctly is enough to soften even the hardest of hearts and Muslims and non-Muslims alike find it a deeply moving experience even if they do not understand what is being said. We feel this even more in Ramadaan when we are in the Taraweeh prayers and we can really feel the difference if we go to a Masjid where the Tajweed rules of Qur’an recitation are not being observed as they should. Every single Muslim has to recite Qur’an in Salah but many of us do not realise that reciting the Qur’an correctly, observing the rules of recitation is not an advanced science for expert reciters alone, rather it is an obligation upon each and every one of us whenever we recite the Qur’an.

What is Tajweed
The word Tajweed linguistically means ‘proficiency’ or ‘doing something well’. It comes from the same root letters as the word ‘Jayyid’ in Arabic (meaning ‘good’): Jeem, Waw and Daal. When applied to the Qur’an, it means giving every letter of the Qur’an its rights and dues of characteristics when we recite the Qur’an and observing the rules that apply to those letters in different situations. We give the letters their rights by observing the essential characteristics of each letter that never leave it. And we give them their dues by observing the characteristics of each letter that are present in them some of the time and not present at other times.

The Qur’an was revealed with Tajweed rules applied to it. In other words, when the angel Jibreel ((AS)) recited the words of Allah to the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) he recited them in a certain way and he showed the Prophet (SAW) the ways in which it was permissible to recite the Qur’an. So it is upon us to observe those rules so that we recite it in the way it was revealed.

At the time of the Prophet (SAW) there was no need for people to study Tajweed because they talked with what is now known as Tajweed so it was natural for them. When the Arabs started mixing with the non-Arabs as Islam spread, mistakes in Qur’an recitation started appearing, so the scholars had to record the rules. Now, because the everyday Arabic that Arabs speak has changed so much from the Classical Arabic with which the Qur’an was revealed, even Arabs have to study Tajweed.

The purpose of Tajweed

The Qur’an is the word of Allah, and its every syllable is from Allah. Its recitation must be taken very seriously. The purpose of the Science of Tajweed in essence is to make the reciter proficient in reciting the Qur’an, observing the correct pronunciation of every letter with the rulings and characteristics which apply to each letter, without any exaggeration or deficiency. And so through this the reciter can recite the Qur’an upon the way of the Prophet (SAW) who received it from Jibreel who received it from Allah (SWT) in the Classical Arabic dialect that it came down in.

Arabic letters each have a Makhraj – an exit or articulation point - in the mouth or throat from which they originate and they also each have Sifaat – attributes, or characteristics - particular to them. Knowing the Makhraj and Sifaat of each letter is an important part of Tajweed. Sometimes two letters have very similar exits which makes mixing them up easy. So if a person does not know the attributes of each letter there is a danger that he will change the meaning of the words in Qur’an recitation. Observing the rules of Tajweed in reciting protects the reciter from making mistakes in reciting the Qur’an.

The ruling of reading with Tajweed

Muhammad bin Al-Jazaree the great Qur’an and Hadeeth scholar of the 9th Century (Hijri) says in his famous poem, ‘Al-Muqaddimah feemaa ‘ala qaari’ihi an yu’allimahu’ detailing the rules of Tajweed:
“And applying Tajweed is an issue of absolute necessity,
Whoever doesn’t apply Tajweed to the Qur’an, then a sinner is he.”

So he regarded it as an obligation and he regarded leaving it as a sin. And the majority of scholars agree that applying the Tajweed rules of Qur’an are an individual obligation (Fard ‘Ayn) upon every Muslim who has memorised part of or all of the Qur’an. That is because the Qur’an was revealed with the Tajweed rules applied to it and the Prophet (SAW) recited it back to Jibreel in that way and the Companions of the Prophet (SAW) read it in that way, so it is an established Sunnah.

And of the proofs that the scholars bring to show the obligation of Tajweed is that Allah says in the Qur’an, the meaning of which is:

‘And recite the Qur’an (aloud) in a (slow and melodious) style (tarteela)’ (Surah Muzzammil, aayah 4)

Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA) said in the explanation of this aayah: “at-Tarteel is Tajweed of the letters and knowing where to stop (correctly)”.[An-Nashr of Ibn Al-Jazaree 209:1]

And of the proofs also is that Allah says in the Qur’an, the meaning of which is:

‘Those who We have given the Book to, give it its right in recitation ( recite it as it should be recited)’ (Surah al-Baqarah, Ayah 121)

And of the rights of reciting correctly is reciting it the way it was revealed. There are various ahadeeth also showing us the importance of Tajweed. Umm Salamah was asked about the recitation of the Prophet (SAW) and she described it as a recitation ‘clearly-distinguished letter by letter’.[Tirmidhi]

Sa’eed bin Mansoor relates in his Sunan that a man was reciting the Qur’an to Abdullah bin Mas’ood and he recited “Innamas sadaqaatu lil fuqara-i wal masaakeen”, so Ibn mas’ood said: “This was not how the Messenger of Allah (SAW) recited it to me!” So the man asked, “How did he read it to you oh Aba Abdir-Rahman?” So he said “Lil Fuqaraaaa-i wal masaakeen”, he elongated the word Fuqaraa and the knowledge of the different lengths of elongation (mudood) is also from the rules of Tajweed.

The scholars have divided the types of mistakes one might fall into when reciting the Qur’an into two types:1.Clear mistakes and
2.Unobvious (hidden) mistakes.
The Clear mistakes must be avoided by all and to avoid them one must know the rules of Tajweed. If a person falls into the Clear Mistakes, this is considered a sin and Ibn Taymiyyah even regarded it undesirable for a Student of Knowledge (i.e. someone who knows Tajweed) to pray behind a person who makes Clear Mistakes in their Salaah. As for the Unobvious mistakes, then the ruling on them is lighter and the recitation of a person falling into this type of mistake is regarded as lacking in completeness and prayer behind such a person is sound.

The table below shows what type of mistakes fall under each category. As you can see, almost all areas of Tajweed are required to be applied by all Muslims.

Clear mistakes Unobvious mistakesMistakes in words which are clear and inconspicuous, whether they change the meaning or not. Mistakes related to correct pronunciation. Scholars, and the ordinary Muslims should avoid these.

Examples of Clear mistakes:
• Changing one letter into another, or a short vowel (harakah) into another, (changing Fathah into Damma or the letter Qaaf into Kaaf etc)

• Not observing the elongations (Mudood) at all. Reciting them quickly.

• Not observing the rules with which to pronounce letters when they are next to each other (like not merging certain letters that should be merged and not clearly pronouncing those which should be clearly pronounced etc.)

•Making light letters sound heavy and heavy letters sound light

• Stopping or starting at an incorrect place so that the meaning is spoilt.
Mistakes which are associated with perfecting the pronunciation.

Known only by those who are experts in this field or study it in depth. Ordinary Muslims may not know these.

Examples of Unobvious mistakes:
• Not being totally exact with the elongation of letters: (Making the Madd shorter or longer by a ½ or even ¼ degree etc.)

• Not observing the attributes of each letter perfectly: (Slightly rolling the Raa’, or exaggerating the ‘N’ sound in Noon etc.)

Reciting the Qur’an melodiously
The Prophet (SAW) used to recite the Qur’an in slow, measured, rhythmic tones as Allah had instructed him, not hurriedly, but rather “he would recite a surah in such slow rhythmic tones that it would be longer than it would seem possible.”[Muslim, Muwatta] He would stop at the end of each aayah [Abu Dawud]. He commanded people to recite in a beautiful voice in a pleasant melodious tone. He said “Beautify the Qur’an with your voices [for a fine voice increases the Qur’an in beauty]”[Bukhari] and he said “He who does not recite the Qur’an in a pleasant tone is not of us.”[Abu Dawud]

Unfortunately all to often we find people reciting the Qur’an quickly and without changing their tone and without any feeling. We should put all our efforts into reciting the Qur’an with as much feeling as we can! Have you ever prayed behind an Imam who read with feeling? Well the Prophet (SAW) said “Truly the one who has one of the finest voices among the people for reciting the Qur’an is the one whom you think fears Allah when you hear him recite.”[Daarimi, Tabaraani]

And once when the Prophet (SAW) complimented Abu Moosaa al-Ash’ari on the beauty of his recitation, Abu Moosaa said “Had I known you were there, I would have made my voice more pleasant and emotional for you.”[Bukhari, Muslim]

Let us remember, that the Qur’an is the word of Allah. In it we find exhortations, warnings, glad-tidings, parables, stories of the past, commands and prohibitions. Aayaat to make us think, reflect, cry, fear, hope, love, fall down in prostration! How can we recite all of this without feeling!? When we recite an aayah of Qur’an we should imagine that we are trying to feel and convey the full message behind that aayah. Perhaps some of us don’t feel confident. I believe that this lack of confidence comes partly from not knowing the rules of Tajweed correctly and so fearing that we will make mistakes and partly from not understanding the meaning of what we are reciting. So let us work hard to remove these two obstacles by learning Tajweed and working towards learning Arabic.

Helpful Tips towards learning Tajweed

° You must find a Qur’an teacher who has studied Tajweed to listen to your recitation and correct you. Tajweed cannot merely be learnt from books, because the movements of your mouth as well as the sounds are important and only a teacher can correct you and make sure you are applying the rules correctly. Sometimes local Mosques will run classes. Qur’an recitation is a science which was passed down generation by generation through teachers not just books, with a direct line to the Prophet (SAW).

° Find a book containing the rules of Tajweed and learn each rule little by little, applying it as you go along with the help of your teacher. There are many concise Arabic books and in English there are some books as well as tapes to help. Look for books with some drawings showing you how to pronounce each letter.

° Listen to Qur’an tapes of reciters who recite very clearly, at a medium or slow speed (like Sheikh Hudhaify or Sheikh Muhammad Hosary) and try and notice them applying the different rules of Tajweed. Repeat after them while trying to apply the rules you’ve learnt. Try to copy their tone and melody as well and see how it changes as the meaning of what they’re reciting changes.

° Tajweed Poem: If you know Arabic you could memorise Ibn al-Jazaree’s poem which contains all the rules of Tajweed. You can get the poem on tape sung as a nasheed in Arab countries. You might find memorising the rules easy in this way.

° Try and apply the rules you learn to the Surahs you have already memorised and don’t become lazy about reciting correctly. You might have to revise the surahs by looking back at them.

° Practice and repetition will make perfect insha Allah: As Ibn al-Jazaree says in his poem about acquiring Tajweed:

‘And there is no obstacle between it (learning Tajweed) and leaving it,
Except that a person must exercise his mouth with it!’

May Allah help us all to give His Book its right when we recite it and make reciting it more beloved to our tongues than anything else. Aameen.

Quran is the only authentic, verbatim Word of the Creator of the Heavens and Earth that was sent down to the Last and Final Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be On him) through Angel Gabriel as the last Book from God to mankind. God had previously sent down or given scriptures to Prophets like Abraham, Moses, Jesus before Prophet Mohammad, but they were tampered with and distorted by man and thus they lost the Authenticity of being divine. Since all these prophets were chosen by the same God they all had one central Message, one Religion for mankind that is to Worship only One True God and submit to His Will. They did not come with different Messages from the Same God but One Message. We can still find the traces of that central Message in both the Torah and Gospels of today. We can find phrases like” Oh Israel hear, my God and your God is One” and “ the Will of God be done” and “ Follow the commandments “ and etc.

Islam means: To Surrender, Obey and Submit to the Will of One True Creator, and to associate no partners to Him. So anyone, anything that Surrenders, Obeys and Submits to the Will of one True God is called a Muslim. And this is what exactly all those prophets were, they were all Muslims.
As we mentioned, above that the previous books like Bible and Torah were originally divine, got corrupted and changed by man, but the Quran as the final Testament was Divinely Preserved and Protected by the Almighty. The proof and evidence of both these facts are clear within the books themselves. Any honest and sincere human who searches for Truth can see that even without making an effort of going into historical backgrounds and evidences. The countless black and white, indisputable contradictions in the Bible for example prove that it has been corrupted and changed by man. The scholars of Christianity admit to the fact that the original Book of Prophet Jesus does not exist and there are many omissions and additions in it. One bible from one Church is not the same as the other a few miles away and there is a new version of Bible being printed all the time that is different than the previous one. All those who come from this type of background, they assume the Quran might be the same like bible, but the Truth is absolutely different.

Nine Great Benefits of Reading and Reflecting Over the Qur'ân

With the Name of Allâh, the Most Merciful, may His Salâh and Salâm be upon His last Messenger Muhammad, to proceed:

Indeed the Book of Allâh is not a book like any other, it is the timeless Speech of Allâh, not a created thing; a study guide for life and death and what comes after. Therefore it deserves a more careful study than anyone else's speech. It necessitates that its reader return to the early narrations of those who witnessed its revelation and heard its explanation by the one deputed by Allâh to rehearse and explain His Words to humanity (sallallâhu 'alayhe wa sallam). For if one would try to ponder over the meanings of the verses without having done this study, then surely the filth of the time that he lives in and his ignorance of the correct application and understanding that the early Muslims had would cause him to understand some things not intended by Allâh Most High, and therefore he would go astray, thinking to be worshipping Allâh.

So every sincere Muslim who hopes to earn Allâh's Love by reciting and reflecting over Allâh's Book, then let him hold tight to the meanings explained by the Prophet (sallallâhu 'alayhe wa sallam), and those taught by the Companions and their immediate followers, and the early scholars of Islâm.

Know that reciting and pondering over the Book of Allâh, devoting your time regularly to its study and implementation has tremendous benefits in this life and the Next, so let us now look to just a few of them to attach ourselves more firmly to Allâh's Majestic Words. Each benefit stands as enough of an encouragement on its own for us to shun any laziness we have and dedicate ourselves to the Qur'ân properly.

1 - Reading and reflecting over the Qur'ân fulfills an Islâmic duty

Indeed the Prophet (sallallâhu 'alayhe wa sallam) summarized this Religion with his statement:

"The Religion is nasîhah (sincerity)!"

So then Tamîm ibn Aws (may Allâh be pleased with him) then said, "We asked, 'To whom?'"He (sallallâhu 'alayhe wa sallam) replied:

"To Allâh, HIS BOOK, His Messenger, the leaders of the people, and their common folk." [2]

The sincerity that is due to the Book of Allâh, as Ibn Rajab Al-Hambalî said, includes having a strong love for it, honoring it and extolling its great status, affirming that it is the Speech of Allâh, seeking to understand its meanings, acting by it, following the orders found in it, spreading its correct understanding, continually studying it, and taking on the good manners that are encouraged in it. [3]

So by reading and reflecting over the Qur'ân, one fulfills an obligation and is rewarded for that. Upon fulfilling this obligation, the Qur'ân then becomes a proof for him on the Day of Judgement! And that is our second benefit we will take by embracing this Noble Book...

2 - The Qur'ân will be a proof for us on the Day of Judgement

This is due to the statement of the Messenger:

"...and the Qur'ân is a proof for you or against you..." [4]

So one of two things will occur with this proof, the Book of Allâh. It will either be in your favor, a proof for you on the Day when you will need every single good deed, or it will be something standing against you, the very Speech of your Creator, a proof against you! Who could be saved from the terrors of that Day if Allâh's own Speech is against him?!?!

Think carefully, dear Muslim brother or sister, about your position with the Qur'ân! Are you neglecting it, contradicting it, being heedless of its orders and prohibitions, are you thinking deeply over it?! Will it be on your side on the Day of Judgement?!

O Allâh! We ask you, by Your Glorious Speech and the rest of Your beautiful Names and Attributes, to make the Qur'ân a proof for us! O Allâh! Don't make the Qur'ân a proof against us on that Day, and save us from the hellfire!

For if Allâh makes the Qur'ân a proof in our favor on that Day, then it would also be an intercessor for us, when NO intercession will take place except by His Permission.

3 - The Qur'ân will intercede for us on the Day of Judgement

The proof: Abû Umâmah relates that the Prophet (sallallâhu 'alayhe wa sallam) said:

"Read the Qur'ân, for verily it will come on the Day of Standing as an intercessor for its companions." [5]

Principles of Tajweed

One who wishes to learn a science needs to know its principles so that he will gain insight into the sought science. There are several principles in the science of tajweed that should be understood:

1. Its definition

By linguistic definition: Betterment

Applied definition: Articulating every letter from its articulation point and giving the letter its rights and dues of characteristics.

Rights of the letters are its required characteristics that never leave it. The dues of the letters are its presented characteristics that are present in it some of the time, and not present at other times. i.e. the medd, idgham

2. Its formation

The words of the Glorious Qur'an and some said Honorable Hadiths also.

3. Its fruits

It is preserving the tongue from mistakes in pronunciation of the Glorious Qur'an during reading.

5. Its place within the sciences

It is one of the Islamic Law sciences that are related to the Glorious Qur'an.

6. Its founder

The rule setter from the practical point of view is the Messenger of Allah because the Qur'an was revealed to him from Allah, the most High, with tajweed, and he, was instructed on it from the Trustworthy, Jibreel, peace be upon him, and taught it to his companions, who then taught it to their followers and so on until it came to us by these chains. Brief History of Compilation of the Qur'an

During the life of the Prophet (saas) (570-632 CE)

The Prophet (saas) used to recite the Qur'an before angel Jibreel (Gabriel) once every Ramadan, but he recited it twice (in the same order we have today) in the last Ramadan before his death. Jibreel also taught the Prophet (saas) the seven modes of recitation.

Each verse received was recited by the Prophet, and its location relative to other verses and surahs was identified by him.

The verses were written by scribes, selected by the Prophet, on any suitable object - the leaves of trees, pieces of wood, parchment or leather, flat stones, and shoulder blades. Scribes included Ali Ibn Abi Talib, Mu'awiyah Ibn Abi Sufyan, Ubey Ibn Ka'ab, Zayed Ibn Thabit.

Some of the companions wrote the Qur'an for their own use.

Several hundred companions memorized the Qur'an by heart.

During the caliphate of Abu Bakr (632-634 CE)

Umar Ibn Al-Khattab urged Abu Bakr to preserve and compile the Qur'an. This was prompted after the battle of Yamamah, where heavy casualties were suffered among the reciters who memorized the Qur'an.

Abu Bakr entrusted Zayed Ibn Thabit with the task of collecting the Qur'an. Zayed had been present during the last recitation of the Qur'an by the Prophet to Angel Jibreel (Gabriel).

Zayed, with the help of the companions who memorized and wrote verses of the Qur'an, accomplished the task and handed Abu Bakr the first authenticated copy of the Qur'an. The copy was kept in the residence of Hafsah, daughter of Umar and wife of the Prophet.

During the caliphate of Uthman (644-656 CE)

Uthman ordered Zayed Ibn Thabit, Abdullah Ibn Al Zubayr, Saeed Ibn Al-Aas, and Abdur-Rahman Ibn Harith Ibn Hisham to make perfect copies of the authenticated copy kept with Hafsa. This was due to the rapid expansion of the Islamic state and concern about differences in recitation.

Copies were sent to various places in the Muslim world. The original copy was returned to Hafsa, and a copy was kept in Madinah.

Three stages of dotting and diacritization

Dots were put as syntactical marks by Abu Al-Aswad Al Doaly, during the time of Mu'awiya Ibn Abi Sufian (661-680 CE).

The letters were marked with different dotting by Nasr Ibn Asem and Hayy ibn Ya'amor, during the time of Abd Al-Malek Ibn Marawan (685-705 CE).

A complete system of diacritical marks (damma, fataha, kasra) was invented by Al Khaleel Ibn Ahmad Al Faraheedy (d. 786 CE).

1. Respect and honour all human beings irrespective of their religion, color, race, sex, language, status, property, birth, profession/job and so on [17/70]

2. Talk straight, to the point, without any ambiguity or deception [33/70]

3. Choose best words to speak and say them in the best possible way [17/53, 2/83]

4. Do not shout. Speak politely keeping your voice low. [31/19]

5. Always speak the truth. Shun words that are deceitful and ostentatious [22/30]

6. Do not confound truth with falsehood [2/42]

7. Say with your mouth what is in your heart [3/167]

8. Speak in a civilized manner in a language that is recognised by the society and is commonly used [4/5]

9. When you voice an opinion, be just, even if it is against a relative [6/152]

10. Do not be a bragging boaster [31/18]

11. Do not talk, listen or do anything vain [23/3, 28/55]

12. Do not participate in any paltry. If you pass near a futile play, then pass by with dignity [25/72]

13. Do not verge upon any immodesty or lewdness whether surreptitious or overt [6/151].

14. If, unintentionally, any misconduct occurs by you, then correct yourself expeditiously [3/134].

15. Do not be contemptuous or arrogant with people [31/18]

16. Do not walk haughtily or with conceit [17/37, 31/18]

17. Be moderate in thy pace [31/19]

18. Walk with humility and sedateness [25/63]

19. Keep your gazes lowered devoid of any lecherous leers and salacious stares [24/30-31, 40/19].

20. If you do not have complete knowledge about anything, better keep your mouth shut. You might think that speaking about something without full knowledge is a trivial matter. But it might have grave consequences [24/15-16]

21. When you hear something malicious about someone, keep a favorable view about him/her until you attain full knowledge about the matter. Consider others innocent until they are proven guilty with solid and truthful evidence [24/12-13]

22. Ascertain the truth of any news, lest you smite someone in ignorance and afterwards repent of what you did [49/6]

23. Do not follow blindly any information of which you have no direct knowledge. (Using your faculties of perception and conception) you must verify it for yourself. In the Court of your Lord, you will be held accountable for your hearing, sight, and the faculty of reasoning [17/36].

24. Never think that you have reached the final stage of knowledge and nobody knows more than yourself. Remember! Above everyone endowed with knowledge is another endowed with more knowledge [12/76]. Even the Prophet [p.b.u.h] was asked to keep praying, "O My sustainer! Advance me in knowledge." [20:114]

25. The believers are but a single Brotherhood. Live like members of one family, brothers and sisters unto one another [49/10].

26. Do not make mockery of others or ridicule others [49/11]

27. Do not defame others [49/11]

28. Do not insult others by nicknames [49/11]

29. Avoid suspicion and guesswork. Suspicion and guesswork might deplete your communal energy [49/12]

30. Spy not upon one another [49/12]

31. Do not backbite one another [49/12]

32. When you meet each other, offer good wishes and blessings for safety. One who conveys to you a message of safety and security and also when a courteous greeting is offered to you, meet it with a greeting still more courteous or (at least) of equal courtesy [4/86]

33. When you enter your own home or the home of somebody else, compliment the inmates [24/61]

34. Do not enter houses other than your own until you have sought permission; and then greet the inmates and wish them a life of blessing, purity and pleasure [24/27]

35. Treat kindly " Your parents " Relatives " The orphans " And those who have been left alone in the society [4/36]

36. Take care of " The needy, " The disabled " Those whose hard earned income is insufficient to meet their needs " And those whose businesses have stalled " And those who have lost their jobs. [4/36]

37. Treat kindly " Your related neighbours, and unrelated neighbours " Companions by your side in public gatherings, or public transportation. [4/36]

38. Be generous to the needy wayfarer, the homeless son of the street, and the one who reaches you in a destitute condition [4/36]

39. Be nice to people who work under your care. [4/36]

40. Do not follow up what you have given to others to afflict them with reminders of your generosity [2/262].

41. Do not expect a return for your good behaviour, not even thanks [76/9]

42. Cooperate with one another in good deeds and do not cooperate with others in evil and bad matters [5/2]

43. Do not try to impress people on account of self-proclaimed virtues [53/32]

44. You should enjoin right conduct on others but mend your own ways first. Actions speak louder than words. You must first practice good deeds yourself, then preach [2/44]

45. Correct yourself and your families first [before trying to correct others] [66/6]

46. Pardon gracefully if anyone among you who commits a bad deed out of ignorance, and then repents and amends [6/54, 3/134]

47. Divert and sublimate your anger and potentially virulent emotions to creative energy, and become a source of tranquility and comfort to people [3/134]

48. Call people to the Way of your Lord with wisdom and beautiful exhortation. Reason with them most decently [16/125]

49. Leave to themselves those who do not give any importance to the Divine code and have adopted and consider it as mere play and amusement [6/70]

50. Sit not in the company of those who ridicule Divine Law unless they engage in some other conversation [4/140]

51. Do not be jealous of those who are blessed [4/54]

52. In your collective life, make rooms for others [58/11]

53. When invited to dine, Go at the appointed time. Do not arrive too early to wait for the preparation of meal or linger after eating to engage in bootless babble. Such things may cause inconvenience to the host [33/53]

54. Eat and drink [what is lawful] in moderation [7/31].

55. Do not squander your wealth senselessly [17/26]

56. Fulfil your promises and commitments [17/34]

57. Keep yourself clean, pure [9/108, 4/43, 5/6].

58. Dress-up in agreeable attire and adorn yourself with exquisite character from inside out [7/26]

59. Seek your provision only by fair endeavour [29/17, 2/188]

60. Do not devour the wealth and property of others unjustly, nor bribe the officials or the judges to deprive others of their possessions [2/188]

The Miracles of the Quran

Many scholars have dedicated special works to this topic, among them:

Rummani l-Zamlakani, Imam l-Razi, Ibn Suraqa, the judge Abã Bakr l-Baqillani, and

Ibn l-`Arabi. And nothing comparable to the latter=s work has been compiled.

Know that a miracle is defined as any act that contradicts the laws of nature, is

the result of some challenge, and is free of contradiction. A miracle is either perceptible

or rational. Because of their stupidity and their lack of insight most miracles produced

for the benefit of the Children of Israel were perceptible to the senses. And because of

their substantial intelligence, and their mature intellect, most of the miracles of this

community have been rational. Furthermore, given the longevity of the shar§`ah, and the

fact that it will endure till the Day of Resurrection, it was the rational miracle that was

chosen as its accompaniment. Bukhari reports the Prophet (s) as saying in this regard:

A Disbeliever’s Reaction to the Qur’an

Al-Waleed ibn Mugheerah, a staunch disbeliever amongst the Quraysh of Makkah, once came upon the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam and asked him to recite the Qur’an for him. The Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam recited the ayah:
إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْمُرُ بِالْعَدْلِ وَالْإِحْسَانِ وَإِيتَاءِ ذِي الْقُرْبَىٰ وَيَنْهَىٰ عَنِ الْفَحْشَاءِ وَالْمُنكَرِ وَالْبَغْيِ ۚ يَعِظُكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَذَكَّرُونَ

Allah commands justice, the doing of good, and liberality to kith and kin, and He forbids all shameful deeds, and injustice and rebellion: He instructs you, that you may receive admonition. (16:90)
He asked the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam to repeat again, so he repeated. Then Al-Waleed said:

والله إن له لحلاوة . وإن عليه لطلاوة . وإن أعلاه لمثمر . وإن أسفله لمغدق . وإنه ليعلو ولا يعلى عليه . وإنه ليحطم ما تحته . وما يقول هذا بشر

By Allah, indeed it has a sweetness to it, and a charm upon it; the highest part of it is fruitful and the lowest part of it is gushing forth with bounty; it dominates and cannot be dominated, and it crushes all that is under it. And it is not the speech of a man.
This is the reaction of one who disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger…What is our reaction to the Qur’an?

How to taste the Sweetness of the Qur’an

Imam Tabari rahimahullah tells us how we can taste the sweetness of the Qur’an:

قال الطبري مصنف (جامع البيان):
إني لأعجب ممن قرأ القرآن ولم يعلم تأويله كيف يلتذ بقراءته؟

He said: I am amazed with one who recites the Qur’an and he does not learn its ta’weel*, how will he taste the sweetness of his recitation?! (Mu’jam al-Adbaa, 63/18)

*ta’weel: used here to mean the tafseer of the Qur’an. During the first few generations of Islam, ta’weel and tafseer were used interchangibly. There are no ahadeeth that mention tafseer, rather the word “ta’weel” is used.

Learn tafseer, for you will be able to taste the sweetness of this book. Iyyas ibn Mu’awiyah rahimahullah said,

“The example of a people who recite the Qur’an and do not know its explanation is like a group of people who have a written message from their king that comes to them during the night, and they do not have a lamp. Therefore, they do not know what is in the message. The example of one who knows tafseer is like a person who comes to them with a lamp and reads to them what is in the message.”

Life is a Test Specially for those Who Believe

Everything in this life is a test specially for the Believers. Happiness, Joy, Sorrow, Having Wealth and Children, Loss of Wealth and Childern, Even Life and Death are all a test from Our Lord in order to expose and filter the liars and the True Believers. Be aware that the blessings of Wealth is a great test at the same time, He the Almighty may test you to see how arrogant, self-centered, selfish you become by giving you lots of Wealth or prove to be generous and giving back to the poor and needy. As it happens to us that when Allah blesses one of us with some wealth and we drive around in our BMWs and Mercedezes looking down at others..... And the lack of wealth or poverty could as well be a test to see whether you despair and get into the business of unlawful earnings and lose your faith...Or He the Almighty may test you with Sorrow and loss of a dear one.... But keep one thing in mind though, That He the Almighty is Exremely Just, Extremely Wise, Extremely Merciful and Gracious, He will not test you with something that you can not bear. The most severely tested human beings were the Prophets of Allah, and perhaps they were tested due to their level of Imaan (Faith) and the best example is Prophet Ibraheem (pbuh). Allah has not promised us a flowery road to Eternal Life of Bless in Paradise but, a tough, thorny road full of trials and tribulations, but certainly that Destination is worth all the hardships. If we look at the wisdom in this logically, it does make sense that the one who tries hard deserves the best. If one wants to become a Doctor, he or she must go through a lot of sacrifice of his and her time, long nights of studying while others are enjoying sleep, locked up in a library with books while others are having fun and on top of all of these; this person must go through some really hard and long Tests in order to become a doctor. But the end or the future of this person is fairly better than the one who wasted all his or her time in vanities. In the same way, all those who struggle hard in the path of righteousness and give lots of sacrifices deserve the gift of Jannah from their Lord. So be aware of this fact, if you claim to believe in Allah and His Messenger then be ready for some sort of Test of this claim that you make, because Allah says the following in His Holy Book:

وَلَنَبْلُوَنَّكُم بِشَيْءٍ مِّنَ الْخَوْفِ وَالْجُوعِ وَنَقْصٍ مِّنَ الْأَمْوَالِ وَالْأَنفُسِ وَالثَّمَرَاتِ ۗ وَبَشِّرِ الصَّابِرِينَ ﴿١٥٥﴾ الَّذِينَ إِذَا

أَصَابَتْهُم مُّصِيبَةٌ قَالُوا إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ ﴿١٥٦﴾ أُولَٰئِكَ عَلَيْهِمْ صَلَوَاتٌ مِّن رَّبِّهِمْ وَرَحْمَةٌ ۖ وَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْمُهْتَدُونَ
۱۵۵ البقره
And We will most certainly try you with somewhat of fear and hunger and loss of property and lives and fruits; and give good news to the patient,
Who, when a misfortune befalls them, say: Surely we are Allah's and to Him we shall surely return. Those are they on whom are blessings and mercy from their Lord, and those are the followers of the right course.

أَحَسِبَ النَّاسُ أَن يُتْرَكُوا أَن يَقُولُوا آمَنَّا وَهُمْ لَا يُفْتَنُونَ ﴿٢﴾ وَلَقَدْ فَتَنَّا الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ ۖ فَلَيَعْلَمَنَّ اللَّهُ الَّذِينَ صَدَقُوا وَلَيَعْلَمَنَّ الْكَاذِبِينَ
العنکبوت
(2) Do men think that they will be left alone on saying, We believe, and not be tried?
(3) And certainly We tried those before them, so Allah will certainly know (Expose) those who are true and He will certainly know (Expose) the liars.

كُلُّ نَفْسٍ ذَائِقَةُ الْمَوْتِ ۗ وَنَبْلُوكُم بِالشَّرِّ وَالْخَيْرِ فِتْنَةً ۖ وَإِلَيْنَا تُرْجَعُونَ
الانبیا ۳۵
(35) Every soul must taste of death and We try you by bad and good by way of probation; and to Us you shall be brought back.

وَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّمَا أَمْوَالُكُمْ وَأَوْلَادُكُمْ فِتْنَةٌ وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ عِندَهُ أَجْرٌ عَظِيمٌ
الانفال ۲۸
(28) And know that your possessions and your children are but a trial and that surely with Allah is a mighty reward.

Satan called a worldwide convention of demons. In his opening address he said,
"We can't keep Muslims from going to Mosque."
"We can't keep them from reading their Quran and knowing the truth."
"We can't even keep them from forming an intimate relationship with their Allah and his messenger Muhammad."
"Once they gain that connection with Allah, our power over them is broken."
"So let them go to their Mosques; let them have their covered dish dinners, BUT steal their time, so they don't have time to develop a relationship with Allah and his messenger Muhammad."
"This is what I want you to do," said the devil:
"Distract them from gaining hold of their Allah and maintaining that vital connection throughout their day!"
"How shall we do this?" his demons shouted.
"Keep them busy in the non-essentials of life and invent innumerable schemes to occupy their minds," he answered.
"Tempt them to spend, spend, spend, and borrow, borrow, borrow."
"Persuade the wives to go to work for long hours and the husbands to work 6-7 days each week, 10-12 hours a day, so they can afford their empty lifestyles."
"Keep them from spending time with their children."

"Give them story books to distract them from teaching their children the real meaning of Salat."
"Keep them too busy to go out in nature and reflect on Allah's creation. Send them to amusement parks, sporting events, plays, concerts, and movies instead. "Keep them busy, busy, busy!"
"And when they meet for spiritual fellowship, involve them in gossip and small talk so that they leave with troubled consciences."
"Crowd their lives with so many good causes they have no time to seek power from Allah."
"Soon they will be working in their own strength, sacrificing their health and family for the good of the cause."
"It will work!" "It will work!"
It was quite a plan!
The demons went eagerly to their assignments causing Muslims everywhere to get busier and more rushed, going here and there.
Having little time for their Allah or their families.
Having no time to tell others about the power of Allah and his messenger Muhammad to change lives.
I guess the question is, has the devil been successful in his schemes?

An Introduction to ’Uloom al-Qur'ân

Chapter 1 from "An Introduction to the Sciences of the Qur'ân"

I. Definition of ’Uloom al-Qur'ân

The knowledge of ’uloom al-Qu'rân, or 'The Sciences of the Qur'ân', deals with the knowledge of those sciences that have a direct bearing on the recitation, history, understanding and implementation of the Qur'ân. It is, therefore, a vast field of Islaamic scholarship, and one that if of primary importance.
Thus, for example, with regards to recitation, ’uloom al-Qu'rân deals with the science of pronunciation (tajweed), the different methodologies of reciting the Qur'ân (the qira'aat), the blessings of reciting the Qur'ân, and the etiquette of its recitation.
With regards to the history of the Qur'ân, ’uloom al-Qu'rân deals with the stages of revelation of the Qur'ân, the compilation of the Qur'ân, the art and history of writing the Qur'aanic script (rasm al-masaahif), and the preservation of the Qur'ân.

With regards to its understanding and implementation, ’uloom al-Qu'rân covers the causes of revelation (asbaab an-nuzool), the knowledge of makee and madanee revelations, the knowledge of the various forms (ahruf) it was revealed in, the understanding of its abrogated rulings and verses (naasikh wa al-mansookh), the knowledge of the various classifications of its verses (muhkam and mutashaabih, ’aam and khaas, mutlaq and muqqayad, etc.), the knowledge of its interpretation (tafseer), the grammatical analysis of the Qur'ân (’iraab al-Qur'ân) and the knowledge of those words whose usage has become uncommon over time (ghareeb al-Qur'ân).
It has been said that the knowledge of ’uloom al-Qur'ân is in reality the knowledge that one is required to know in order to properly interpret the Qur'ân. Therefore, to call this branch of Islaamic knowledge 'The Procedure and Methodology of Interpretation' (’Ilm Usool at-Tafseer) instead of ’uloom al-Qur'ân would not be far from the truth. [1] However, ’uloom al-Qur'ân also includes topics that have very little or no bearing of tafseer, such as compilation of the Qur'ân, and the development of the script of the Qur'ân. Therefore, the knowledge of the ’uloom al-Qur'ân is more general that ’Ilm Usool at-Tafseer.
II. Benefits of Studying ’Uloom al-Qur'ân
There are many benefits to the knowledge of ’uloom al-Qur'ân. Firstly, it enables the reader to realize the wealth of knowledge and insight that exists with regards to the Book of Allâh. As some of the scholars of the past said, "True knowledge is to know one's ignorance." Only when a person realizes what he does not know will he appreciate how little he does know. Secondly, it enables the student of knowledge to better understand the Qur'ân, in that he will be familiar with the history of its revelation and collection, and the various aspects that aids its comprehension. When he reads the books of tafseer, he will be able to understand the terms used, and benefit from the knowledge in them to a greater extent. In other words, he will be equipped to further increase his knowledge and to learn about his religion. Thirdly, it increase a person's belief (eemaan), because he will realize the beauty of the Qur'ân and the great blessings that he has been given through its revelation. He will not be fooled by the fallacious claims of its enemies, and his heart with be at ease with regards to its authenticity. He will understand the miraculous nature of the Qur'ân, and thus better cherish the greatest Book that mankind has been given. Fourthly, he will be able to defend the Qur'ân against his enemies, since he will be equipped with the true and pristine knowledge of the Qur'ân, unadulterated by the prejudices of its opponents.
It is no exaggeration to say that, once a person learns the essentials of his religion and what is required for him to know, the first knowledge he should turn his attention to is the knowledge of the Qur'ân and its sciences. As Allâh says [2] in the Qur'ân,
«(This is a) Book that We have sent down to you, full of blessings, so that they may ponder over its verses, and that men of understanding may remember» [38:29]
III. The History of ’Uloom al-Qur'ân
Like all the sciences of Islâm, the knowledge of ’uloom al-Qur'ân initiated with the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam himself. The Companions of the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam about any concept that they did not understand in the Qur'ân. For example concerning the verse,
«Those who believe and do not mix their belief with injustice, only they will have security, and they are guided» [6:82]
they asked, "O Messenger of Allâh! Who amongst us does not do injustice (to his soul)?" They had understood that the verse was referring to those believers who did not commit any injustice, or sin. The Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam replied that the injustice referred to this verse was shirk, or the association of partners with Allâh. [3]
Such was the enthusiasm of the Companions in seeking this knowledge that they were able to not only explain any verse in the Qur'ân, but also give its history and the cause of its revelation. Ibn Mas’ood said, "I swear by Allâh, besides whom there is no other god, there is no soorah in the Qur'ân except that I know where it was revealed! And there is not a single verse in the Qur'ân except that I know the reason behind its revelation! If there were any person that knew more about the Qur'ân than I did, and it was possible for me to reach him, I would ride (on my camel) towards him (to get his knowledge." [4] ’Alee ibn Abee Taalib told his students, "Ask me! For I swear by Allâh, there is nothing that you will ask me except that I will answer you. Ask me concerning the Book of Allâh! For I swear by Allâh, there is not a single verse in the Qur'ân except that I know whether it was revealed at night or during the day, or on a mountain or on a plain!" [5]
There were many Companions who were famous for their knowledge of the Qur'ân, among them were the four Khulafaa ar-Raashidoon, [6] ’Abdullaah ibn Mas'ood (d.32 A.H.), ’Abdullaah ibn ’Abbaas (d.68 A.H.), Ubay ibn Ka’ab (d.32 A.H.), Zayd ibn Thaabit (d.45 A.H.), Aboo Moosaa al-Ash’aree (d.50 A.H.), ’Abdullaah ibn Zubayr (d.73 A.H.) and ’Aa'ishah (d.57 A.H.).
The generation that came after the Companions, the Successors, studied eagerly under the wise guardianship of the Companions. These students took over their predecessors’ responsibilities, and passed this knowledge faithfully to the next generation. Ibn ’Abbaas’ students, Sa’eed ibn Jubayr (d.95 A.H.), Mujaahid ibn Jabr (d.100 A.H.), ’Ikrimah al-Barbaree (d.104 A.H.), Taawoos ibn Kaysaan (d.106 A.H.), and ’Ataa' ibn Rabaah (d.114 A.H.), were all famous in Makkah; Ubay ibn Ka’ab's students, Zayd ibn Aslam (d.63 A.H.), Aboo al-’Aaliyah (d.90 A.H.) and Muhammad ibn Ka’ab (d.120 A.H.), were the teachers of Madeenah; and in Iraaq, ’Abdullaah ibn Mas’ood left behind his great legacy to ’Alqamah ibn Qays (d.60 A.H.), Masrooq ibn al-Ajda’ (d.63 A.H.), al-Hasan al-Basree (d.110 A.H), and Qataadah as-Sadoosee (d.110 A.H.). These three places, Makkah, Madeenah, and Koofah, were the leading centres of all the sciences of Islâm, including tafseer and ’uloom al-Qur'ân.
Thus the knowledge of the Qur'ân was passed on '...by the trustworthy (scholars) of the ummah, who protected it from the alteration of the heretics, the false claims of the liars, and the false interpretations of the ignorant.' [7]
Early scholars did not write on ’uloom al-Qur'ân in general, but rather wrote separate tracts on each science of the Qur'ân. This was due to the fact that, during the early stages of Islaamic history, the oral transmission of knowledge occupied a more important status that the written transmission. In addition, the general level of knowledge was high, and did not warrant the extensive writing down of knowledge.
The first and most important of the topics to be written on was tafseer. For example, each of the following scholars wrote a tafseer of the Qur'ân, composed of statements from the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam and the Companions: Sufyaan ath-Thawree (d.161 A.H.), Sufyaan ibn ’Uyaynah (d.198 A.H.), Wakee’ ibn al-Jaraah (d.197 A.H.), and Shu'bah ibn al-Hajjaaj (d.160 A.H.).
Following his predecessor's footsteps, Muhammad ibn Jareer at-Tabaree (d.310 A.H.) wrote the monumental Jaami’ al-Bayaan ’an Ta'weel aay al-Qur'ân, a tafseer that all later scholars who benefit from. Other early tafseers were written by Aboo Bakr ibn Mundhir an-Naysabooree (d. 318 A.H.), Ibn Abee Haatim (d.328 A.H.), Ibn Hibbaan (d.369 A.H.), al-Haakim (d.405 A.H.) and Ibn Mardawayh (d.410 A.H.). All of these tafseers were based on reports from the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam and the Companions and Successors, and included the chains of narration (isnaad) of the reports.
After the books of tafseer followed a plethora of books on the other sciences of the Qur'ân: ’Alee al-Madeenee (d.234 A.H.), the teacher of Imaam al-Bukhaaree, wrote a book on Asbaab an-Nuzool; Aboo ’Ubayd al-Qaasim ibn Sallaam (d.224 A.H) wrote two books, one on the science of the Qira'aat (which was one of the first of its kind), and one on abrogation in the Qur'ân, Naasikh wa al-Mansookh; Ibn Qutaybah (d.276 A.H.) wrote a book on rare words in the Qur'ân, Mushkil al-Qur'ân; Aboo Ishaaq az-Zajjaaj (d.311 A.H.) wrote a grammatical analysis of the Qur'ân, ’Iraab al-Qur'ân; Ibn Darstawayh (d.330 A.H.) composed a tract on the miraculous nature of the Qur'ân, I’jaaz al-Qur'ân; Aboo Bakr as-Sijistaanee (d.330 A.H.) wrote another book on rare words in the Qur'ân, Ghareeb al-Qur'ân; Aboo Bakr al-Baaqillaanee (d.403 A.H.) wrote his famous treatise, also related to the miraculous nature of the Qur'ân, I’jaaz al-Qur'ân; Imaam an-Nasaa'ee (d.303 A.H.), the author of the Sunan, wrote one on the merits of the Qur'ân, Fadaa'il al-Qur'ân; Aboo al-Hasan al-Waahidee (d.468 A.H.) wrote his famous book on Asbaab an-Nuzool; ’Ilm ad-Deen as-Sakhaawee (d.634 A.H.) wrote one on the various qira'aat, and so on.
It must also be mentioned that, in addition to these books, many of the books of hadeeth, such as the Saheehs of al-Bukhaaree and Muslim, included sections on various topics of ’uloom al-Qur'ân. For example, most of the books of the Sunnah have chapters on the tafseer of the Qur'ân, the benefits of reciting the Qur'ân, the history of its compilation, and other topics.
Finally, the scholars of the later generations started compiling all of these sciences into one book, and thus began the era of the classic works on ’uloom al-Qur'ân. The first works of this nature were actually meant to be works of tafseer. One of the first works that is reported in later references (but is not extant) is that of Aboo Bakr Muhammad ibn Khalaf ibn al-Marzaban (d.309 A.H.), entitled 'al-Haawee fee ’Uloom al-Qur'ân.' [8] Another work, of which manuscript copies of fifteen of a total of thirty volumes are extant, is that of ’Alee ibn Ibraaheem Sa’eed (d.330 A.H.), otherwise knows as al-Hoofee, which he entitled, 'Al-Burhaan fee ’Uloom al-Qur'ân'. This book is primarily one on tafseer, but also discusses all related aspects of a verse. So, for example, after each portion of the Qur'ân, it includes information about the verses' meaning, its interpretation, its purpose of revelation, its proper method of recitation, the different qira'aat of the verses and how they affect the meaning, where to stop and where not to, and so forth. This work is considered to be the first of its kind in its expansive approach to all the related sciences of the Qur'ân. [9]
There appeared after this, books of a similar nature, until finally Badr ad-Deen az-Zarkashee (d.794 A.H.) appeared with his monumental Al-Burhaan fee ’Uloom al-Qur'ân (the same title as al-Hoofee's work). This is one of the great classics on ’uloom al-Qur'ân available in print. A little over a century later, another classic appeared, that of Jalaal ad-Deen as-Suyootee (d.911 A.H.), entitled al-Itqaan fee ’uloom al-Qur'ân. These two works are considered the standard resource works on ’uloom al-Qur'ân, and both have been printed a number of times during the last few decades.
Books on ’uloom al-Qur'ân continued to appear throughout the centuries, [10] and these last few decades have been no exception. The better know books of this era have been Manaahil al-’Irfaan fee ’Uloom al-Qur'ân by Shaykh Muhammad ’Abd al-Adheem az-Zarqaanee; al-Madhkhal li Dirasaat al-Qur'ân al-Kareem by Muhammad Aboo Shahmah; and the two books, both of which are entitled Mabaahith fee ’Uloom al-Qur'ân, one by Dr. Subhee Saalih and the other by Dr. Mannaa’ al-Qattaan.
Unfortunately, there does not seem to be great interest in English circles concerning this topic. Other topics, such as hadeeth and fiqh, have been given greater attention. [11] In English, the only work present [12] is Ahmed Von Denffer's book, ’Uloom al-Qur'ân: An Introduction to the Sciences of the Qur'ân. [13] It is a useful book in that it presents a summary of many concepts of ’uloom al-Qur'ân, and is meant for a young adult audience. However, probably due to the nature of the audience, the author does not go into great detail.

It should be pointed out that the Qur'ân is only in Arabic, and is the speech (kalaam) of Allâh, as shall be proved and elaborated upon in the next chapter. Therefore, the unconditional phrase, "Allâh says," when used in this book (or any book), only refers to the Qur'ân. When this phrase is used in a language other than Arabic, it contains an additional implicit cause, that should be understood by the audience, and this clause is, "the meaning of which is," since the Qur'ân is only in Arabic. This is the only book that this author came across concerning this topic from a Muslim author. There is, however, a translation of Ibn Taymiyyah's An Introduction to the Principles of Tafseer (al-Hidaayah Publishing and Distribution, Birmingham, 1993).

Arabic - The Language of the Qur’ân

The Praise is for Allâh, the one who has honoured us with the Qur’ân, and chosen for us the noblest of languages, and the peace and the blessings be upon the best one of the ones who articulated themselves in Arabic, and the most-preferred from the servants of Allâh, Our Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him), and his family and his distinguished companions.
The Arabic language is the language of the Noble Qur’ân, and with it, the Qur’ân was revealed upon the seal of the Messengers, so attention to the Arabic language is to have attention to the Book of Allâh the Most High and the studying and the practising of it helps in the understanding of the Noble Book of Allâh and the narration of the master of the Prophets, Muhammad (Peace be upon him). It is also the language of our esteemed Islamic law (As-Sharee’ah), so when we defend it we are not proceeding on a path of nationalism or racism or culturalism, but in fact we are defending the language of our religion (way of life) and it is the cloak of our Islamic Civilisation.

As such, Shaykh-ul-Islam Ibn Taymiyah said: “The Arabic Language is from the Religion, and the knowledge of it is an obligation. For surely the understanding of the Qur’ân and the Sunnah is an obligation, and these two are not understood except with the understanding of the Arabic Language, and whatever obligation is not fulfilled except by certain steps then those steps themselves become obligatory (to fulfil the initial obligation)” [The Necessity Of The Straight Path by Ibn Taymiyyah ( 1/470)]
So then the knowledge of the Arabic language is essential for every Muslim so that he can perform his religious acts of worship and he can be proficient in the recitation of the Noble Qur’ân. Allâh says in His Book (which means):
“Verily we have sent it down as an Arabic Qur’ân in order that you may understand” (Soorah Yusuf: 2)
And likewise the Most-Glorious said (which means):
“And thus We have inspired unto you (O Muhammad) an Arabic Qur’ân that you may warn the mother of the towns (Makkah) and all around it” (Soorah ash-Shura: 7)
And The Exalted said (which means):
“And truly this (the Qur’ân) is a revelation from the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists), which the trustworthy Ruh (Jibreel) has brought down upon your heart (O Muhammad) that you may be (one) of the warners, in the plain Arabic language” (Soorah ash-Shura: 192-195)
And He the Most High also said (which means):
“A Book whereof the verses are explained in detail, a Qur’ân in Arabic for people who know” (Soorah Fussilat: 3)
So from these verses we see why the Arabic Language has reached its station due to the fact that Allâh has guaranteed its protection when He undertook upon Himself the preservation of this Noble Qur’ân since it is the language of that Book.
The Most Merciful said (which means):
“Verily! It is We who have sent down the Reminder (i.e. the Qur’ân) and surely We will guard it (from corruption)” (Soorah Hijr: 9)
Despite this, many of the Muslims are content by spending their whole lives reading a translation of the Qur’ân and so depriving themselves of the miracle of the Speech Of Allâh. Also a translation implies a human factor, which goes against the very essence of the Book of Allâh. Also, the person who does not know Arabic, will have added difficulty in his concentration during his prayers and also in his understanding of the Sunnah. This is because a language is just not a collection of words which can readily be translated into another language but is a whole way of thinking.
Dr. Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din Al-Hilali (Translator of the Noble Qur’ân) writes:
“It is a pity that many nations are only satisfied in the translated meaning of the Qur’ân and Prophet's Sunnah instead of studying the (true) Arabic text of the Qur’ân and Prophet’s Sunnah. For this reason they are divided into various sects (due to the lack of knowledge about the religion of Islam) e.g. as regards to the ways of religious education, etc. so they are plunged in differences, which was prohibited by Allâh. If the translation of the meaning of the Qur’ân is meant for the above said purpose then it is a real mischief-doing, and an evil action and is against what was brought by Allâh’s Messenger (Peace be upon him) and also against the opinions of the early present day religious scholars. All the religious scholars unanimously agree that the Qur’ân and the Sunnah should be taught in the language of the Qur’ân (i.e. Arabic Language). So did the early religious scholars of the Muslim nation when they conquered different countries.
Translations are mainly meant for informing the people who have not yet embraced Islam to make clear to them the principles of Islam and the teachings of Muhammad (Peace be upon him) and to know its exact facts. When they reach this state and Allâh has blessed them with Islam, they must take the Qur’ânic and the Messenger’s Language (i.e. Arabic) as the only language to understand Islam. May Allâh's mercy be on Shaykh 'Umar Uzbak, a great Turkish man, who strove for Islam in Uzbakistan under the Russian government, after his long fight against the enemies of Islam with fire (iron) and tongue (speech), he took refuge in Afghanistan at Kabul, where the government honoured him. I met him there in 1352 A.H. (approx. 1932 CE) i.e. nearly 40 years ago, and he had vowed to Allâh that he will never speak to a relative or anybody else except in the Qur’ânic and Messenger's (Arabic) language. His wife sent a man for me to intercede for her to him that he should speak with her and her children in the Turkish language even for an hour everyday. So when I spoke to him about it, he said: 'Russians had compelled us to learn perfectly the Russian language (by force), so we learnt it. And unless they knew that the learning of the Russian language will make the person who learns it, follow their ways of thinking, characters, and their traditions, they would not have forced anybody to learn it.' He further said to me, 'I have vowed to Allâh long ago not to speak except in the language of the Qur’ân and Sunnah (i.e. Arabic) and I do that only for Allâh's sake. If my wife and children desire to enjoy speaking with me, they should learn the language of the Qur’ân and of the Prophet (Peace be upon him) (i.e. Arabic) and I am ready to teach them the Qur’ânic language whenever they desire that” [The Noble Quran in the english language by Dr. Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din Al- Hilali & Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan , page xxiv ( 1994 edition )]

Verily, we have heard the call of one (Muhammad p.b.u.h.) calling to Faith: 'Believe in your Lord,' and we have believed. *Our Lord! Forgive us our sins and remit from us our evil deeds, and make us die in the state of righteousness along with Al-Abraar (those who are obedient to Allah and follow strictly His Orders). *Our Lord! Grant us what You promised unto us through Your Messengers and disgrace us not on the Day of Resurrection, for You never break (Your) Promise." (3/191-194)

16- (رَبِّ اجْعَلْنِي مُقِيمَ الصَّلاَةِ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِي رَبَّنَا وَتَقَبَّلْ دُعَاء) [إبرهيم-40]
"O my Lord! Make me one who performs As-Salaat (Iqaamat-as-Salaat), and (also) from my offspring, our Lord! And accept my invocation." (14/40)
17- (رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيَّ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَوْمَ يَقُومُ الْحِسَابُ) [إبرهيم-41]
"Our Lord! Forgive me and my parents, and (all) the believers on the Day when the reckoning will be established." (14/41)
18- (رَّبِّ أَدْخِلْنِي مُدْخَلَ صِدْقٍ وَأَخْرِجْنِي مُخْرَجَ صِدْقٍ وَاجْعَل لِّي مِن لَّدُنكَ سُلْطَانًا نَّصِيرًا) [الإسراء-80]
"My Lord! Let my entry (to the city of Al-Madinah) be good, and likewise my exit (from the city of Makkah) be good. And grant me from You an authority to help me (or a firm sign or a proof)." (17/80)

Usage of “Fear” in the Qur’an

A few days ago, we had our weekly tafseer of Juz Amma class with br Nouman at the masjid and he briefly covered some different words used for fear in the Qur’an. I was very fascinated by these words so I decided to do a bit more research on their meanings and usage in the Qur’an and share what I’ve learned.
The Oxford dictionary defines fear as:
• noun 1 an unpleasant emotion caused by the threat of danger, pain, or harm. 2 the likelihood of something unwelcome happening.
• verb 1 be afraid of. 2 (fear for) be anxious about. 3 archaic regard (God) with reverence and awe
We have a few words to describe this emotion in English such as: scared, anxiety, terror, panic, and bewilderment. All of these words carry the same meaning and are nearly synonymous to one another.
Arabic, on the other hand, has a considerable amount of words to describe fear; each with a different detail and connotation. The Qur’an alone has more than 10 words for fear!

Here is a brief analysis of some of the words used in the Qur’an for fear:

1-Khawf خوف

Khawf is a perceived danger and a fear of something that is physical. Khawf is the type of fear you’d feel if a dog began to chase you.
Allah ta’ala says:
وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِ وَنَهَى النَّفْسَ عَنِ الْهَوَىٰ
“But as for him who feared (khawf) standing before his Lord, and restrained himself from impure evil desires and lusts.” (79:40)
The Believer has a fear of something that is manifest and real, which is captured in this ayah by the use of khawf. Allah azza wa jal did not say in this ayah that the person fears their Lord, but fears the standing before his Lord, and as a result of this fear, he protected himself from lusts and desires.
On the other hand, Allah says about the disbelievers:
لَّا يَخَافُونَ الْآخِرَةَ
“They do not fear (khawf) the hereafter.” (74:53)

In another ayah, Allah describes His blessings upon the Quraysh:
الَّذِي أَطْعَمَهُم مِّن جُوعٍ وَآمَنَهُم مِّنْ خَوْفٍ
“(He) Who has fed them against hunger, and has made them safe from fear (khawf).” (106:4)
While most of tribes of Arabia worried about being invaded or of a war, Allah ta’ala protected the Quraysh from this danger and granted them safety in Makkah.

2-Khashyah خشية

Khashyah is a fear as a result of knowledge and leads to action. It is when you know the greatness and magnitude of what you fear, and as a result, have an awe and reverence of it.
Allah ta’ala tells the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam:
إِنَّمَا تُنذِرُ مَنِ اتَّبَعَ الذِّكْرَ وَخَشِيَ الرَّحْمَـٰنَ بِالْغَيْبِ
You can only warn him who follows the Reminder, and fears (khashyah) the Most Merciful unseen.(36:11)
Allah ta’ala describes the one who will benefit from the Qur’an: he has khashyah of Ar-Rahmaan. By using the Name of Allah, Ar-Rahmaan, it shows the level of their khashyah. We fear Al Jabbaar (The Compellor) and Al Azeez (The All Mighty), but to fear Ar-Rahmaan, The Most Merciful, is the height of true fear of Allah. These people have khashyah of Allah bil ghayb, in the unseen can be interpreted two ways: they fear Allah and have an awe of Him when they are alone and they fear Allah and have an awe of Him even though they do not see Him azza wa jal.
In the famous ayah that most of us know, Allah ta’ala says:
إِنَّمَا يَخْشَى اللَّهَ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ الْعُلَمَاءُ
“It is only those who have knowledge among His slaves that fear Allah.” (35:28)
Imam ibn Katheer rahimahullah states with regards to this ayah, “only those who have knowledge truly fear Him as He should be feared, because the more they know about the Almighty, All-Powerful, All-Knowing Who has the most perfect Attributes and is described with the most beautiful Names, the more they will fear Him.”

3-Khushoo’ خشوع

Khushoo’ is a fear that is manifested not only in your heart but it is shown on your face and limbs. Khushoo’ literally means to bend down and to become still. Khushoo’ is used for the submissiveness of the heart which is reflected on the limbs.
Allah ta’ala states,
قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ

“Successful indeed are the believers,” (23:1)
And the first quality of these successful believers:
الَّذِينَ هُمْ فِي صَلَاتِهِمْ خَاشِعُونَ
“Those who offer their Salat (prayers) with all solemnity and full submissiveness.” (23:2)
This is the kind of fear that we should have in salah; this fear should be present on our faces and not just in our hearts. If the heart has khushoo’, the body will have khushoo’. So khushoo’ is not just a state of the heart, it is a state of the heart which is visible on a person’s actions, in their posture, and in their movements.
In this dunya, the believers have this khushoo’, but in the aakhirah Allah states about the Disbelievers:
أَبْصَارُهَا خَاشِعَةٌ
“Their eyes will be downcast.” (79:9)
These eyes that did not humble themselves to Allah in the dunya, will have fear in the aakhirah. This fear will be apparent on their faces; faces that are full of shame, humiliation and abasement.

4-Taqwa تقوى

Taqwa is the most common word used for fear. It comes from the root wiqaayah which means to protect and is used for a shield.Taqwa is to protect yourself from the consequences of your own actions. It is to protect yourself in two ways: to abandon sinning and adorn yourself with good deeds because you fear the punishment of Allah.
Allah ta’ala says in the ayaat of Hajj,
وَتَزَوَّدُوا فَإِنَّ خَيْرَ الزَّادِ التَّقْوَىٰ
“And take a provision (with you) for the journey, but the best provision is At-Taqwa” (2:197)
This ayah is beautiful because Allah ta’ala commands us to take provisions during Hajj, that is true reliance upon Allah, but He also advises us to take the provision of the hereafter which is taqwa.
During Hajj, you are tested with many things and you must also keep away from certain actions that are otherwise halaal for you to do. The only way one can restrain themselves and be patient during Hajj is to have taqwa of Allah.

5-Hadthr حذر

Hadthr is to escape something out of fear and cautiousness because you are in proximity of it. Allah azza wa jal uses this type of fear to describe the hypocrites in many ayaat. He says:
يَحْذَرُ الْمُنَافِقُونَ أَن تُنَزَّلَ عَلَيْهِمْ سُورَةٌ تُنَبِّئُهُم بِمَا فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ
“The hypocrites fear (hadthr) lest a Surah should be revealed about them, showing them what is in their hearts.” (9:64)

6-Raa’a راع

Rau’ is to startle someone, or to show up out of nowhere and so the person becomes alarmed. It is also defined as to respect combined with fear. This word only appears once in the Qur’an to describe the panic that Ibrahim alayhi salaam felt panic when the Angels refused the food that he offered them:
فَلَمَّا ذَهَبَ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الرَّوْعُ وَجَاءَتْهُ الْبُشْرَىٰ يُجَادِلُنَا فِي قَوْمِ لُوطٍ
Then when the fear (rau’) had gone away from Ibrahim, and the glad tidings had reached him, he began to plead with Us (Our messengers) for the people of Lut.” (11:74)

7-Wajas وجس

Wajas is a fear when you hear news that scared you. It also means to hide your fear within you so that you don’t let the person or thing scaring you know that you are scared.
Ibrahim was scared of the angels but he did not let them see his fear:
فَلَمَّا رَأَىٰ أَيْدِيَهُمْ لَا تَصِلُ إِلَيْهِ نَكِرَهُمْ وَأَوْجَسَ مِنْهُمْ خِيفَةً
“But when he saw their hands went not towards it (the meal), he mistrusted them, and conceived a fear (wajas) of them.” (11:70)
Musa alayhi salaam also felt this hidden fear after he saw what the magicians could do with their staffs:
فَأَوْجَسَ فِي نَفْسِهِ خِيفَةً مُّوسَىٰ
So Musa conceived fear (wajas) in himself. (20:67)

8-Wajl وجل

Wajl is to have a fear that penetrates deep in your heart. It is a fear in which a person trembles and shivers. The word “mawjil”, from the same root, is a depressed ground for a large deep hole. When you come upon a huge hole in the ground out of nowhere, you are immediately shaken with fear.
This is how Allah ta’ala describes the hearts of the believers; they are immediately awe-struck and the fear of Him penetrates deep into their hearts:
إِنَّمَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ الَّذِينَ إِذَا ذُكِرَ اللَّهُ وَجِلَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ
“The believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, feel a fear (wajl) in their hearts.” (8:2)

9-Rahb رهب

Rahb is that kind of a fear that makes you very alert, very careful and does not let you relax. This is the type of fear that students feel during exam time: restless, careful, and concern for passing. It is also fear that you are afraid that you will disappoint the one you love.
Allah azza wa jal commands us to have this fear of Him:
إِنَّمَا هُوَ إِلَـٰهٌ وَاحِدٌ ۖ فَإِيَّايَ فَارْهَبُونِ
Verily, He is (the) only One Deity. Then, fear Me much. (16:51)
The believers call upon Allah while fearing (rahbah) Him, and hoping (raghbah) in Him. Who knows which duaa these two words are mentioned from the sunnah? Post in the comments inshaAllah if you know!
Rahb is also defined as a fear that one has in which he is concerned about saving himself. Allah ta’ala described the hypocrites as being more concerned about saving themselves from the Muslims instead of saving themselves from Allah:
لَأَنتُمْ أَشَدُّ رَهْبَةً فِي صُدُورِهِم مِّنَ اللَّهِ ۚ ذَ‌ٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ قَوْمٌ لَّا يَفْقَهُونَ
“Verily, you are more fearful (rahbah) in their breasts than Allah. That is because they are a people who comprehend not.” (59:13)

10-Ru’b رعب

Ru’b is to be overwhelmed with fear and terror that makes you lose your reason.
Allah ta’ala placed this fear in the hearts of the mushriks of Makkah during the battle of Badr:

إِذْ يُوحِي رَبُّكَ إِلَى الْمَلَائِكَةِ أَنِّي مَعَكُمْ فَثَبِّتُوا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا ۚ سَأُلْقِي فِي قُلُوبِ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا الرُّعْبَ
“(Remember) when your Lord revealed to the angels, “Verily, I am with you, so keep firm those who have believed. I will cast terror (ru’b) into the hearts of those who have disbelieved.” (8:12)
Ru’b is also used to describe the reaction of a person if they entered upon the Companions of the Cave:
لَوِ اطَّلَعْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ لَوَلَّيْتَ مِنْهُمْ فِرَارًا وَلَمُلِئْتَ مِنْهُمْ رُعْبًا
Had you looked at them, you would certainly have turned back from them in flight, and would certainly have been filled with awe (ru’b) of them. (18:18)
Allah made the cave so that no person would be able to remain there, such as a passerby, because the atmosphere was made that the person would feel fright so they would not be able to stay, but rather run in terror.

11-Shafaq شفق

Shafaq has many meanings in its different forms. Ashfaqa is that fear that some harm will come to a person you love, it is a fear that is mixed with love, such as the love of a mother for her children; she is fearful out of love for them.
The Believers will reminisce in Jannah:
قَالُوا إِنَّا كُنَّا قَبْلُ فِي أَهْلِنَا مُشْفِقِينَ
“Saying: “Aforetime, we were afraid (shafaq) in the midst of our families.” (52:26)
This ayah can be interpreted in two ways: Firstly, the believers, even amongst their families, feared Allah and secondly, they had this shafaq for their families, they were afraid for the aakhirah of their families.
While the believers were mushfiqeen in the dunya, the disbelievers will be mushfiqeen in the aakhirah.
تَرَى الظَّالِمِينَ مُشْفِقِينَ مِمَّا كَسَبُوا وَهُوَ وَاقِعٌ بِهِمْ
“You will see thewrong-doers fearful (shafaq) of that which they have earned, and it (the punishment) will surely befall them.” (42:22)
When this word is followed by من, min, such as this ayah, it does not mean love at all but rather a fear in the heart such as apprehension, anxiety, concern and worry.Try and imagine the fear and worry they will feel knowing that Hell-Fire awaits them. Either you are mushfiq now, or will be mushfiq later.

12-Wajf وجف

Wajf is a fear mixed with discomfort. It is when your heart pounds and palpitates so hard out of fear. Iti s to be agitated in a disturbed condition. Awjaftul Khayl means ‘I made my horse race forward by making its heart race.’
Allah azza wa jal depicts for us the Day of Judgment:
قُلُوبٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ وَاجِفَةٌ
“hearts that day will be full of terror.” (79:8)
By not putting an “al” (alif-laam, ال) on quloob, it shows that only some hearts will have this fear on that Day. Some hearts that day will be beating out of their chests. Also the sentence structure illustrates that these hearts are not scared at the moment, right now they have peace, but on that Day they will experience wajf. Furthermore in the above ayah, waajifah is an ism faa’il (someone who does an act), so their hearts will be start pounding and it will not come to rest. The terror will not subside.
….Another lesson as to why translations will never do justice to the Qur’an, and is a small taste of the intricacies of the Arabic language.

عن النواس بن سمعان رضي الله عنه قال‏:‏ سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول‏:‏
‏”‏يؤتى يوم القيامة بالقرآن وأهله الذين كانو يعملون به في الدنيا تقدمه سورة البقرة وآل عمران تحاجان عن صاحبهما ‏”‏

An-Nawwas bin Sam`an (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam saying, “The Qur’an and its people who applied it, will be brought on the Day of Resurrection preceded with Surat Al-Baqarah and Surat Al-`Imran arguing on behalf of their companions.” (Muslim)

Qur’anic Characteristic #1:

Quran is Al Hakeem

Allahumma ija’lnaa min ashaabil Qur’an, O Allah, make us among the companions of the Qur’an. Ameen.
The first characteristic of the Qur’an that we will share is: Al Hakeem.
Allah ta’ala says in Surah Yaseen ayah 2:
وَالْقُرْآنِ الْحَكِيمِ
By the Qur’an, full of wisdom!

Allah ta’ala swears by the Qur’an in this verse, which is known as a ‘qasm’ in Arabic. In the Qur’an, Allah ta’ala swears by many things, showing the importance and honor of the object.
Allah ta’ala is honoring the Qur’an by taking a qasm by it, and when Allah ta’ala swears an oath, we know what that whatever comes after (jawaab qasm) is very important. And what is the characteristic (sifah) of the Qur’an mentioned? Al-Hakeem, full of wisdom. This Qur’an is not an ordinary book, but it is Hakeem. Hakeem is from ha kaaf meem, and hikmah means: wad’u shayyin fee muhalihi, to place something where it belongs. How is the Qur’an Hakeem? There are three meanings of Hakeem:
Haakim: The Qur’an is decisive and conclusive. The Qur’an has the final decision.
Dhoo Hikmah: Full of wisdom, in three ways. Firstly, wisdom in its content and rulings. They are according to the fitrah (human nature) and they are what mankind needs. The rulings in the Qur’an are according to the intellect–they just make sense. Secondly, wisdom in its order and arrangement. And thirdly, wisdom in its style. We can derive oceans of meaning just from a few words (remember Ni’mah?) There is so much wisdom in the Qur’an, that even if we tried, we would never be able to grasp all of it. That’s why there is never an end to studying the Qur’an.
Muhkim: The Qur’an is firm and perfect in strength and meanings. Nothing can change it or attack it.
So if the Qur’an is Hakeem, full of wisdom in so many ways, then it is worthy of being followed.

Qur’anic Characteristic #2:

Quran is Qayyiman

May Allah make us among the companions of the Qur’an, Ameen.
Qur’anic Characteristic #2 is: Qayyiman.
Allah ta’ala begins suratul Kahf:
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَنْزَلَ عَلَىٰ عَبْدِهِ الْكِتَابَ وَلَمْ يَجْعَلْ لَهُ عِوَجًا
قَيِّمًا لِيُنْذِرَ بَأْسًا شَدِيدًا مِنْ لَدُنْهُ وَيُبَشِّرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ الَّذِينَ يَعْمَلُونَ الصَّالِحَاتِ أَنَّ لَهُمْ أَجْرًا حَسَنًا
All the praises and thanks be to Allah, Who has sent down to His slave the Book (the Quran), and has not placed therein any crookedness. It is straight to give warning of a severe punishment from Him, and to give glad tidings to the believers, who work righteous deeds, that they shall have a fair reward. (18:1-2)
Allah ta’ala says about the Qur’an: <<وَلَمْ يَجْعَلْ لَهُ عِوَجًا>> , and He did not make therein any crookedness. The word for crookedness is عِوَجًا, ewajaa, from ayn wow jeem and this is an amazing word. It means crookedness or deviance in something. Ewaj is used for something that has been bent. There are two words from this root of ayn wow jeem:
1st one is ‘ewaj, which is conceptual or intangible crookedness. It’s the type of crookedness that someone has in their character, when they are not behaving “straight” or “normal”.
2nd word is ‘awaj. And this means something that was straight, but became crooked. This type of crookedness is very easy and obvious to notice.
Allah azza wa jal uses the first word in the ayah, ‘ewaj, not ‘awaj. This means that the Qur’an has no crooked information, not even the slightest form. Subhan Allah, this first ayah is negating ANY fault whatsoever in the Qu’ran.
How is the Qur’an not crooked? There is no distortion amongst the verses, the words are just as Allah revealed them. The Qur’an has been preserved by writing, by memorization to the point that we even know HOW the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam recited the Qur’an…each word, each letter, even each syllable! There is no deviation in the teachings or the information, there is no contradiction in it, and there is nothing in the Qur’an contrary to the truth.
The first ayah negates any fault, and this second ayah confirms what the Qur’an really is: Qayyiman, one completely straight. Qayyiman is from qaaf wow meem or qaum, and this means to stand. Remember this definition: Qayyiman is one that IS straight and LEADS to that which is straight.
The Qur’an is Qayyiman in 3 ways:
It is Mustaqeem: One that is straight.
It is Mu’tadil: One that is balanced.
It stands firm for the benefit of people. Its commands are a source of benefit.
Why is the Qur’an Qayyiman? <<لِيُنْذِرَ بَأْسًا شَدِيدًا مِنْ لَدُنْهُ>>, so as to warn of a severe punishment from near Him. يُنْذِرَ, yunthira is from noon thaal ra, nathr and this means to warn. Nathr is to give news that arouses fear, and has an effect on the person. So when one hears a warning, they should become fearful and seek to change.The warning is of: <<بَأْسًا شَدِيدًا>>, ba’san shadeedan, a severe punishment. Ba’san is from ba hamza seen and it literally means violence, difficulty and also power/might. Shadeedan is from sheen daal daal and it means something that is severe. This ba’san shadeedan is referring to the Hellfire, which is severely harsh and violent to those who enter it. There are so many in this world who do not know of the Qur’an, and this is a reminder for the believers to spread the message of the Qur’an and to be fearful themselves of the punishment of Hellfire.
One of the ways the Qur’an is qayyiman is because its mu’tadil (balanced). We can see this when Allah ta’ala says, <<وَيُبَشِّرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ الَّذِينَ يَعْمَلُونَ الصَّالِحَاتِ أَنَّ لَهُمْ أَجْرًا حَسَنًا>> and to give glad tidings to the believers, those who work righteous deeds that for them is a good reward.

Qur’anic Characteristic #3:

Quran is Full of Dhikr

Characteristic of the Qur’an:
In one of the most beautiful beginnings of the Qur’an, Allah ta’ala starts surah Saad with a powerful reminder. He says:
ص ۚ وَالْقُرْآنِ ذِي الذِّكْرِ
Saad. And by the Qur’an, full of dhikr! [Surah Saad, verse 1]
This ayah begins with a letter, which are known as: huroof muqatta’aat, the disjointed letters. There are many opinions as to what these letters mean, but the greatest and strongest opinion is that none but Allah ta’ala knows their meanings.
So this surah, with the first letter, has already set the tone with a powerful beginning. Then Allah ta’ala says: “and by the Qur’an, full of dhikr!” If you notice the letter ‘wow’, it shows that Allah is swearing and taking an oath by the Qur’an which is called a ‘qasm’ in Arabic, which is why the translation is “and by”.
What is this Qur’an? ذِي الذِّكْرِdhi dhikr, full of dhikr. the word ‘dhi’ means possessor, one that contains, one that owns something. So what does the Qur’an own, contain and possess? adh-Dhikr. This is one of the names of the Qur’an, and gives multiple interpretations. There is a reason why this word has not be translated yet in this post, it is because this word in this context has several meanings:
Firstly, dhikr here means “tadhkeer” (تذكير), a reminder. What does the Qur’an remind of? It reminds us of reality of life and of our duties and obligations.
Secondly, dhikr here means “maw’idhah” (موعظة), admonition. A maw’idhah is an advice or instruction, but not just any advice, this advice is effective and pushes a person to do good deeds and to abstain from disobedience.
Thirdly, dhikr here means a bayyaan (بيان) ‘a mention, explanation’. What does the Qur’an mention? The nations of the past, ahkaam (rulings) and future events as well.
Lastly, dhikr here means sharaf (شرف), honor. The Qur’an, by its mention, is a source of honor for those who accept. The one who mentions the Qur’an is honored as well as the Qur’an itself is honorable.
So this Qur’an is dhi dhikr: possessor and owner of reminder, admonition, advice and honor. SubhanAllah, absolute completeness. This ayah is a response to the pagans of Makkah who said, we wish we had a dhikr from the former people! Allah responds, this is the Qur’an, dhi dhikr.

Quran is Mubaarak

The next Characteristic of the Qur’an is Mubaarak.
Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says in Surah Saad verse 29,كِتَابٌ أَنْزَلْنَاهُ إِلَيْكَ مُبَارَكٌ لِيَدَّبَّرُوا آيَاتِهِ

وَلِيَتَذَكَّرَ أُولُو الأَلْبَاب
“(This is) a Mubaarak Book which We have sent down to you, that they may reflect upon its signs, and that men of understanding may remember.” (Saad: 38:29)
Mubaarak is that which is full of barakah. And barakah is from the root, ba ra kaaf (ب ر ك), and barakah is that which lasts long and has the ability to increase. When something is Mubaarak, it includes three meanings:
It is a source of katheerul khayr, full of goodness. So Mubaarak is that which has a lot of good and is where unexpected and expected good is received.
Source of katheerul fawaa’id, a lot of benefits.
That which is thaabit, firm and has continuity. The blessings one receives from it is firm, it is not a temporary benefit but has permanence.
So how is the Qur’an Mubaarak? Let’s look at all three of these meanings:
the Qur’an is a source of katheerul khayr: it is a guidance and mercy for the believers, it gives the news of Jannah, it is a healing, it contains commandments that guide us, it is a light, it is an admonition and advice from Allah, and it is a source of reward (10 rewards per letter).
the Qur’an is a source of katheerul fawaa’id: it benefits in both this life and the next. In this dunya it is a furqaan for us-the criterion between right and wrong, it increases one in knowledge and it is a source of protection. In the aakhirah, it is a means to ascend to the highest levels of Jannah (hadeeth: iqra’ war taqi, read and ascend!), it an intercessor and shade for its companions, and it will accompany its readers in the grave.
the Qur’an contains firm, continuous and permanent blessings: the Rabb Who revealed it is Blessed, the Prophet it was revealed to is blessed (alayhi salaatu wa salaam), the month it was revealed in is blessed, the night it was sent down in is blessed, the city it was revealed in is blessed, those who store it in their heart are blessed, those who learn it are blessed and those who teach it are blessed.
So ask yourself: am I missing out on this Mubaarak Book? Have you tasted some of its goodness, benefits and blessings?

Qur’anic Characteristic #5:

Quran is Mubeen

The next characteristic of the Qur’an is Mubeen.
“Al Kitaabil Mubeen” appears many times in the Qur’an at the beginning of surahs after the huroof muqatt’aat (disjointed letters).
الر ۚ تِلْكَ آيَاتُ الْكِتَابِ الْمُبِينِ Alif-laam-ra. These are the ayaat of the “Mubeen” Book. (12:1)
الر ۚ تِلْكَ آيَاتُ الْكِتَابِ وَقُرْآنٍ مُبِينٍ Alif-laam-ra. These are the ayaat of the Book, and a “Mubeen” Qur’an. (15:1)
طس ۚ تِلْكَ آيَاتُ الْقُرْآنِ وَكِتَابٍ مُبِينٍ Ta-Seen. These are the ayaat of the Qur’an, and a book that is “Mubeen.” (27:1)
طسم تِلْكَ آيَاتُ الْكِتَابِ الْمُبِينِ Ta-Seen-Meem. These are the ayaat of the “Mubeen” Book. (28:1-2)
حم وَالْكِتَابِ الْمُبِينِ “Ha-meem. And by the “Mubeen” Book!. (43:1-2) (this ayah is a qasm/an oath)
حم وَالْكِتَابِ الْمُبِينِ “Ha-meem. And by the “Mubeen” Book!. (44:1-2) (this ayah is a qasm/an oath)
When Allah ta’ala repeats something so many times in His Speech, then we know there is a reason for the repetition and importance in what is being repeated.
What does it mean that the Qur’an is “Mubeen”?
Mubeen is from the root ba-ya-noon (ب ي ن ), bayn. And this root has three meanings:
Any type of distance.
That which is far (bu’ud, بعد)
Something that is clear (waadih, bayaan, واضح، بيان)
Something that is clear is far in resemblance to the other.
This Qur’an is Mubeen, it is clear and far from anything else in resemblance. The name Mubeen implies two meanings:
That which is clear in itself. The Qur’an is clear in its content and in its understanding.
That which clarifies the other. The Qur’an clarifies truth from falsehood, guidance from misguidance, the believers from the disbelievers, and it clarifies the mind of a person.
The Qur’an is a bayyinah, a clear proof. Everything that is stated in this Qur’an is based on bayyinah: the ilm of Allah azza wa jal. In other words, this Kitaab is authentic. There is nothing like it, it is unique, clear, comprehensive and profound in its meaning.
May Allah azza wa jal make us companions of Qur’anil Mubeen, Ameen.

Qur’anic Characteristic #6:

Quran is Majeed

Allah ta’ala says in the first ayah of Surah Qaaf,
ق ۚ وَالْقُرْآنِ الْمَجِيدِ
“Qaaf. By the Qur’an that is Majeed” (50:1)
Majeed is from the root meem-jeem-daal (م ج د), majd. Majeed means: dhul majd: one that has majd. Majd is complete ‘athamah (sovereignty) and sultaan (authority). From the root, it is said: majdatul ibl, “the camel reached a vast land”. This gives us the meaning that majd is wus’ah, vastness and spaciousness. Majeed means vastness in greatness, in glory, in might, in honor and in respect.
How is the Qur’an Majeed?
1- It has ‘atheemah, great status. Allah has given it the highest status of all the books sent down.
2- It is a Muhaymin over all previous books. Muhaymin means one who guards and looks after. The Qur’an is authoritative and corrects the mistakes done by the people in the previous books.
3- It is Haakim (One that Judges), not Mahkoom (one that is judged). It is Naasikh (one that abrogates), not Mansookh (one that is abrogated). Over it nothing else can be preferred.
4- It has the khayr (goodness) of dunya and aakhirah.
The Qur’an is Majeed: exalted, very honorable, respected, perfect, complete, high status and of great might.

Qur’anic Characteristic #7:

Quran is Kareem

Allah ta’ala says in Suratul Waaqi’ah:
وَإِنَّهُ لَقَسَمٌ لَّوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌ
And that is indeed a mighty oath if you but knew,-(56:76)
What is this magnificent oath that Allah azza wa jal has taken?
إِنَّهُ لَقُرْآنٌ كَرِيمٌ
That this is indeed a Qur’an, Kareem. (56:77)
Kareem is from kaaf-ra-meem and karam is used for a grape vine. A grape vine looks very beautiful and brings a lot of benefit. When Kareem is used for Allah: it means Allah ta’ala is very generous and He is of high status. When kareem is used for a person, it means they are very honorable and hold a great position as well as they have character. When kareem is used for speech, it means a word that is gentle, good, humble and beneficial.
When used for Qur’an, Kareem means:
1- This Qur’an that is very beneficial, full of blessings, katheerun naf’, full of benefits. Every letter brings you reward, every reading brings you a new lesson.
2-This Qur’an which is honorable. Honored by who? By Allah azza wa jal, it is Allah’s Kalaam–the most honored Kalaam with an exalted status.
This Qur’an is Kareem: it changes hearts and guides a person to action, it shows people the reality of life and the reality of the hereafter.
Imam Sa’di rahimahullah states in his tafseer that Kareem means: katheerul khayr, containing every good and every type of knowledge. It is a book that if one seeks to benefit from, they will.
This is a Kareem book, revealed by Al Kareem, to a messenger that is Kareem for us…Yet what have we done with it?

THE LANGUAGE OF ISLAM: The Importance of Learning Arabic

For those of us who were not raised as Muslims, those of us who reverted to Islam by choice, the first words we uttered as Muslims--indeed, the words which marked our passage into our faith--were in Arabic: ashshaduan la illaha illa Allah, wa ashshaduana Muhammadan rasul Allah. We were required not only to properly utter this phrase, but to thoroughly understand it.

We quickly learned other Arabic words and phrases such as assalaam alaikum, alhamdu lillah, in sha' Allah. Our prayer must be in Arabic and we must memorize Qur'an in Arabic, no matter what our native tongue. Many new Muslims as well as non-Arab Muslims can, in fact, communicate fairly well with Arabic speakers as a result of even minimal knowledge of Arabic. Yet non-Arab Muslims must learn Arabic for reasons other than simple communication and rote memorization. Allah (swt) chose Arabic to be the language of the Qur'an--His final Message to humankind: "Lo! We have revealed it, a Lecture in Arabic, that ye may understand." (Yusuf, 2); "Thus have We revealed it, a decisive utterance in Arabic..." (Ar-Ra'ad, 37); "A Scripture whereof the verses are expounded, a Lecture in Arabic for people who have knowledge." (Fusilat, 3). Arabic is a language of words with precise, unquestionable meanings as well multiple nuances. Indeed, it is a language which can, in only a few words, address a very specific topic (e.g., who a man can marry) as well as convey diverse meanings (e.g., as-Samad, one of the names of Allah, cannot be translated into just one word; it can mean the Absolute, the eternally Besought of all, etc.) Classical Arabic has consistent, predictable rules of grammar, pronunciation, and spelling, making it actually a fairly easy language to learn. It is a poetic language, pleasant to the ear. The mere sound of the Qur'an being read in Arabic has been able to move even non-Muslims to tears! Subhan Allah, what a beautiful medium Allah (swt) chose to guide us, teach us, and comfort us! Obviously, we cannot comprehend the Qur'an correctly--we cannot recite it beautifully, we cannot understand it when we hear it and, ultimately, we cannot act on it unless we learn the language in which it was revealed and consider Arabic to be the most important language to master. A translation, even an excellent one with extensive commentary, cannot replace the original text revealed and preserved by Allah Himself; any translation must contain human error or points for disagreement, but the Qur'an in Arabic has no such flaws. The perfect memorization of the Qur'an in Arabic by Muslims is, indeed, how the ummah takes part in preserving the Qur'an. More than this, recitation of the Qur'an earns incredible rewards, as the following ahadith indicate: When somebody recites one letter from the Holy Qur'an he will get one good deed in recompense and this one recompense will be equal to ten good deeds. I do not say that Alif Lam Meem is a letter, but Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter, and Meem is a letter. (Tirmidhi) A reader of the Holy Qur'an will be called upon on the Day of Judgement: "Start reading the Holy Qur'an and ascend the (high) stages of the Heaven, and recite slowly as you had been reading in the world, as thy abode will be where the last verse of thy recitation will end.” (Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi) Study the Qur'an (regularly) for it will act as an intercessor and entreat for its readers on the Day of Judgement. (Muslim) Secondly, because our prayer--the most important part of our worship--must be in Arabic, we must make a strong effort to learn and understand what we are saying. If we just utter words that mean nothing to us, the prayer becomes empty ritual. However, if we understand and believe what we say, what our Prophet (saws) taught us to say, our prayer becomes a rescue, a comfort, a complete act of worship for which Allah promises to reward us generously. Thirdly, once we learn Arabic, our access to information about Islam multiplies. Although a large number of excellent books and translations of Arabic works are available in non-Arabic languages, a plethora of essential volumes and publications exist in Arabic only. If we are able to read these materials, our knowledge about our religion will increase and, in sha' Allah, our iman as well. Finally, many non-Arab Muslims live in communities with a large number of Arabic speakers, they live in or plan to migrate to Arab Muslim countries, and/or they plan to make hajj. For such people, the Arabic language can be a strong unifying force; in fact, cultural anthropologists consider language to be the strongest factor binding people into a nation. Anywhere a Muslim travels, for instance--whether China, Jordan, Pakistan, or America--the phrase "assalaam alaikum" and its response, "wa alaikum assalaam" are universal, constant, consistent among Muslims. Not only is it a way of identifying other Muslims, it is a way of bonding them much in the same way as the code of a particular club marks and joins its members. Few realize that even this simple phrase has unified Muslims throughout the world for over fourteen centuries through a common language: Arabic. At the same time, if the ummah does not have a common tongue--if we can only speak English, Turkish, or Japanese--we can easily be divided and conquered. Our differences become magnified if we cannot understand each other. The more Muslims we can reach through a common language, the firmer our brotherhood/sisterhood becomes. The most crucial step in learning Arabic is to listen to, recite, memorize, and understand the Qur'an in Arabic. Even if we follow a tape while reading the English (or German or French, etc.) translation we can pick up a few words each time. At the same time, it is usually not difficult to find Arabic-speaking sisters who are willing to teach Qur'an (free of charge, of course) and/or Arabic in exchange for English lessons or babysitting or other services. We must seek out these sisters and brothers, however, and fully devote ourselves to our study. If no Arabic speakers are available, which can indeed be the case if a Muslim lives apart from a large Arab Muslim community, a number of books and tapes exist which can at least get a person started. Although learning any new language can be difficult and frustrating, the mastery of even the basics of Arabic is not without its rewards from Allah (swt). In fact, 'Aisha reported that the Messenger of Allah (saws) said: "A person who recites the Qur'an, and reads it fluently, will be in the company of the obedient and noble angels, and he who reads the Qur'an haltingly and with difficulty will have a double recompense." (Bukhari and Muslim). Most importantly, we must remember to ask Allah alone for help in this and all matters. As our Prophet (saws) taught us, we must supplicate thus: O Allah! Be Thou gracious unto me by enabling me to eschew sins altogether, as long as Thou sufferest me to live; and have mercy on me lest I concern myself with aught which is of no consequence to me. And vouchsafe me the aesthetic sight, which will cause Thee to be well pleased with me. O Allah! Originator of the heavens and the earth, Lord of Majesty and Glory and of Might incomprehensible! I beseech Thee, O Allah, O Beneficent Lord, in the name of Thy Majesty and of the Light of Thy Countenance to cause mine heart to retain Thy scripture even as Thou has taught (it unto me). And grant that I may recite it in such manner as will cause Thee to be well pleased with me. O Allah! Originator of the heavens and the earth, Lord of Majesty and Bounty, and of Might incomprehensible! I beseech Thee, O Allah, O Beneficent Lord, in the name of Thy Majesty and of the Light of Thy Countenance to illuminate my sight with Thy scripture, to set free my tongue therewith, to comfort my heart therewith, to widen my bosom therewith, and to wash my body therewith. For, indeed, none aideth me in (attaining) the truth besides Thee. And none giveth it unto me beside Thee. There is no strength nor power save in Allah, the Exalted, the Magnificent. (Tirmidhi)
